Benicarlo, on Spain's eastern coast, is one of those places you remember and where you will want to return. It is never overcrowded with tourists and has a distinct Mediterranean character. There are over 20,000 people living here. Benicarlo is both a modern city with its industry and tourism and a traditional seafaring town. The rich fertile farmlands around Benicarlo mean that agriculture thrives and the town is known in particular for the artichoke. A Denomination of Origin for the artichoke was awarded in recognition of the excellent quality and unique features of the locally produced variety. Benicarlo Artichoke Festival is held in January and the Fallas is held on St. Joseph's Day, 19 March. Benicarlo has ample campsites, villas, tourist apartments and top-quality hotels.
